To promote discussion:

What would classify as a ‘historical NFT’
At what point would you consider a regular NFT to become a historical NFT?
Are historical NFTs just old NFTs or do they have to have sigificance?
If they have to have siginificance, what defines significant?

“Historical NFT” or “Vintage NFT” Would be token projects created from 2011-2018. Since Looks Rare is currently ETH only it would begin with Etheria, which was created in 2015. As a community we would be able to create a direct line of communication to provide all collections. Also we have tools that devs have created that can link to an API

@Gizmo - Generally I believe most of the people within the historical community agree that as long as it’s before 2019, without any dealbreakers within the contract. The older the better. One thing that is hard to account for is all of the Pre-ERC721 NFTs, most of which have a wrapper contract. I run a site at nftarchaeology.io that documents any serious issues as well as all the information on each historical NFT (on Ethereum). I also have an API available at api.nftarchaeology.io you can use if it’s helpful.

I can’t emphasize enough how excited the historical community is about the idea of exposing the contract creation date of a contract on an NFT marketplace. This is something that we’ve been dreaming about for a very long time!

Right now if people aren’t as hardcore as some of us and they want to know when a collection was created they either need to be taught how to go to etherscan and find the contract creation date or even worse they ask on twitter and someone gives them incorrect information. Accuracy of data is very important and contract-creation date is a very objective measure that we all use and agree on. LR currently supports ERC-721 or ERC-1155 tokens and the logical starting place here is to use the objective datapoint of contract creation date and add that metadata to all of your existing collections. Potentially displaying the year under the name of the collection such as “Created in 2021”.

This would be step one. Step two would be manual overrides for edge cases like wrappers. There would need to be a verification process for these wrappers. The historical space can very easily compile a list of all know wrappers that we are aware of to start with. We have found that contract creation date of a collection does matter to collectors but we have not seen this information made visible in a meaningful way on any marketplaces to date. Bringing awareness to it would also get collectors of 2022 or 2021 NFTs starting to see that hey maybe there is value in knowing that a project is a year old vs a few months old when they look at newer NFT collections which can start their journey about valuing age.

Then the final piece of this is to add a filtering mechanism by year. For Ethereum, this would start with 2015 and go to 2022. Then anyone who wants to can quickly view collections based on the year they were created and do that “research” way more easily than ever before. Beyond this, we also have dreams of creating official collections for bridged assets from other chains like Bitcoin and Namecoin. IMO adding dedicated collections for non-ethereum based assets would make for a very solid Part II of this effort.

What I’ve outlined here would be a strong starting point for bringing awareness to an asset’s age age that would ultimately help create a more efficient, safe market for your users to be in and then integrating NFTs from other chains would come next. You would also have a small army from the historical space that would be there to fully support this initiative in any way that we can. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us about any of this. We are here to help!

Finally a ‘Classic’ section is coming for every NFT created before Dec 2019, which I would classify as a historical NFT.

Very much looking forward to this, especially given my interest to older items, which will eventually stand the test of time for serious collectors.

Let’s do it!

This is planned in the form of universal tags, not specifically “Historical NFT sorting”, but Tags for collections, one of which would be “Historical” or something similar.
